Amanda Brisendine attributed the 30 pounds she gained in the past year to an abandoned smoking habit and rich food. So when she went to
the hospital with sharp stomach pain, she wasn’t expecting to leave with a newborn son.
“I don’t know how I didn’t know. I just didn’t know,” Brisendine said Tuesday from her bed at Overlake Medical Center’s Birthing Center, where she delivered Alexander Joseph Britt by Caesarean section.
George Macones, chairman of the OB/GYN department at Washington University in St. Louis, said he’s seen about a dozen cases in his nearly 20-year career in which a woman didn’t know she was pregnant.
The pregnancy isn’t always obvious when a woman is overweight, or a woman will have spotting or bleeding during the pregnancy and mistake it for menstruation, said Macones, who specializes in high-risk pregnancies.
The 26-year-old Renton woman went to Group Health Cooperative’s Eastside campus last Saturday after experiencing several days of abdominal pain so intense that she called in sick from work.
Doctors examined her and performed a pregnancy test that showed she was nine months pregnant.
“I was so shocked. I was nauseous,” said Brisendine, whose boyfriend Jason Britt didn’t believe her at first. “I thought she was lying,” said Britt, 33.
Already mother to a 14-month-old daughter, Melodies, Brisendine said she didn’t experience typical pregnancy symptoms, like a missed menstruation, morning sickness, fatigue or food cravings. “Everything was normal as far as I knew,” she said.
Ultrasounds showed low amniotic fluid in the placenta and the baby wasn’t moving properly, said Brisendine’s doctor, Danica Bloomquist.
“From our assessment, the baby wasn’t doing well in utero,” Bloomquist said. “He needed to come out.”
After an emergency C-section Sunday, Brisendine delivered 7-pound, 5-ounce Alexander.
“We’re in for a really, really big adventure,” Brisendine said.
Wow!!!
Talk about a surprise birthday!
I had a cousin whose girlfriend had that same thing happen to her.
I think it's strange. I guess I just can't grasp how someone could be pregnant and not even know! But, I guess it happens. Can you imagine?
Thank goodness she gave up smoking. You'd think the fact she was having unprotected sex, would alert her to the possibility of getting pregnant.
I've always wondered about the woman's menstrual cycle, and the movement of the baby. I mean, if you miss a period, that's a possible sign, plus when the baby gets old enough, it starts moving around. But, in this case, the article said that the woman was spot bleeding, and that the baby wasn't moving around like it was supposed to, due to the low level of amniotic fluid in the placenta. It's so strange to think that this could happen. It'd definitely be a complete and total shock.
There can be several reasons for a missed period. Stress, illness, hormonal problems ect. It's not always an indication of pregnancy.
No, it's not always an indication, but when it does happen, pregnancy is one of the first things that people consider.

Well…IF PEOPLE are having sex, [Male/Female BondingIntroUnited] then possibly…
so many factors to consider…
…might possibly consider a, “baby is on zeWay”…
WHAT IF: Girl who missed MENSTRUAL cycle is NOT having sex.. QUESTION:
Is a Baby on the way, you know, is girl pregnant/Mother to be….. THINK.
…Girls that are swimmers who are on regular menstrual cycles (NOT using Birth
Control Pill) and who are NOT having sex may EASILY miss/skip have a monthly
mense/Menstrual cycle/BloodyShow/”whatever” Term you desire to use…
anyhow…
Girl may easily NOT have to use Tampon/Menstrual Pads/etc… ‘cause there would
not be any blood for “period” would have not come due to…perhaps cold water
shock to system/bodily…. *Trust me Lake Michigan can be Mighty Cold even in
Summer . smile

Nah, Gemini... I think you need some more FACTS.

Excuse me, but no I don't. You can ask many people out there what they would think if they, or their girlfriend/wife missed their period, and I guarantee you that most of them would say that the possibility of pregnancy would come to their minds. And, how ridiculous is it for you to ask, what about girls who dont' have sex, but they miss their menstrual cycles? Give me a break! Of course the idea of pregnancy wouldn't come into their minds. In cases like that, there's obviously something else going on. I did not say that pregnancy is always the reason for a missed period. All I said was that it is a thought that goes through people's minds, when it is missed, and no one can deny that.
I can.
Just did as a matter of fact.

Grace, as usual you are trying to start an argument. What Gemini said dmade perfect sense. Most women who are sexually active wil think of the possibility of pregnancy if they miss a period. And of course, no woman inher right mind would suspect pregnancy if she is not sexually active.
In regards to Post #11 the statement, "You can ask many people out there what they would think if they, or their girlfriend/wife missed their period, and I guarantee you that most of them would say that the possibility of pregnancy would come to their minds."
NO! ...MOST PEOPLE I KNOW would rush to their DOCTOR (ob./gyn ) questioning WHAT WENT WRONG due to fact that MOST people I personally know as far a COUPLE is in a situation where one or the other of the partners has had some sort of a STERILIZATION procedure preformed so as NOT to have any more kids...many times due to the fact of being Opposed to Abortions and the couple not desiring for unwanted kids in their home and not desiring to place any kidd of their conception up for adoption... They have their "Family Complete," as how they desire and thusly they opt for Sterilization of one or both of them...SO in these types of cases AND THERE ARE SEVERAL OF THEM...IF the Female of that couple becomes "with Child," then YES! there is concern of, "What is the problem...like is CANCER an issue to be reckoned with or what exactly...??? AND PREGNANCY is NOT what is FIRST suspected.

Are you really that dense? Look at the letters carefully and you might get it. If not, maybe someone with more patience for your crap can explain it to you.
I don't Post a web place unless it is real... it would be helpful if others did likewize.

This is so absurdly ridiculous. Grace, I feel that you are being utterly dense about everything that I am trying to say. This post was about a woman, who is perfectly capable of having a baby, becoming pregnant, and delivering a baby, without her knowing. This was not an article about a woman who is sterilized, and cannot have children anymore. I am talking about women, and their partners, who are perfectly capable of having children. This discussion was not about women/men who aren't able. I said that if you asked a woman or their partner what they would think if they or their partner missed a cycle, then I guarantee that pregnancy would come into their minds, and I stand by that statement. If they are able to become pregnant, then it's going to come into their minds. If, for whatever reason, they are unable to have children, then, of course pregnancy wouldn't be a thought. Be sensible here. It sounds like you are trying to say that I said that in every single case of a missed period, pregnancy would be an issue, and that is not what I am saying at all. Everyone knows that their are certain circumstances and issues to look at. Of course pregnancy isn't the only one. But, if it's possible, then it's going to be checked out.
Ooooh, cat fight!
Gemini Grace has a PHD in being dense to annoy, most intelligent she revels in deliberately being retarded. The best solution is to put the idiot permanately on ignore.
Grace runs over to Goblin and gives Him the biggest hug that he has ever had in his life...cyber-spacewize...saying, Thank You, Thank You Thank You Goblin my sweet Preciousiness...precious want fishy...going for swim down into deep deep waters of cave so daughtening dark that it mystifies the most observant in a twlight surpassing the level of the divine held in a rapture that is totally beyond benine..maybe beten. ...Yes Gemini..PLEASE put me on IGNORE!...please..

A lot of people in my family miss their periods for like 3 or 4 months at a time and don't think anything of it. My cousin actually missed 4 periods in a row, never thought of pregnancy, went to the doctor for weakness or something, and then came back and told her she was pregnant and did an ultra sound and showed 4 or 5 months...she never even thought of it. had too much other stuff on her mind.
Also, there are people that become pregnant and they have normal periods all throughout their pregnancy. And if they don't gain much weight, they have no idea. Just like the girl who went to her high school prom, didn't know she was pregnant, had the baby in the girl's room, and left. That sounds totally weird, but I believe it could happen.
